How to Use This Tool

Start by selecting your calculation mode. The default mode, Estimate light sleep from total sleep, is the most common: enter your total sleep time (in hours or minutes), pick your age group, and hit Calculate. The tool will show your estimated light sleep minutes and the remaining time spent in deep and REM sleep combined.

If you're planning a nap, switch to Nap planner mode. Enter the intended nap duration, and the tool will estimate how much of that nap is likely to be light sleep. For a quick reverse calculation, use Find total sleep for target light sleep — enter how many minutes of light sleep you want, and the tool tells you the total sleep time needed to achieve that.

You can also use the quick-fill buttons to load common sleep durations (7.5 h, 8 h, 6 h, or a 90-minute nap) and then adjust as needed.

How It Works

Sleep is not a uniform state. It cycles through stages — light sleep (N1 and N2), deep sleep (N3), and REM sleep — roughly every 90 minutes. The proportion of time spent in each stage changes with age. This calculator uses typical population averages:

  • Adults (18–64): ~50% light sleep
  • Older adults (65+): ~45% light sleep (deep sleep decreases)
  • Teens (14–17): ~50% light sleep
  • Children (6–13): ~55% light sleep

These percentages are based on sleep architecture studies, such as those summarized by the Sleep Foundation. The calculator multiplies your total sleep time by the age-specific percentage to estimate light sleep minutes. For the nap mode, we assume about 60% of a short nap is light sleep, which is a reasonable approximation for naps under 90 minutes.

Worked Examples

Example 1: A 30-year-old adult sleeps 7.5 hours. Light sleep estimate = 7.5 h × 50% = 3.75 hours = 3 h 45 min. The remaining 3 h 45 min is split between deep and REM sleep.

Example 2: A 70-year-old sleeps 7 hours. Light sleep estimate = 7 h × 45% = 3.15 hours = 3 h 9 min. Notice the lower percentage due to age.

Example 3: You want to get 2 hours (120 minutes) of light sleep. Using the reverse mode with adult settings: total sleep needed = 120 min ÷ 0.50 = 240 minutes = 4 hours. That's a short night, but it shows the math.
